What is CPT?
Curricular Practical Training (CPT) is a U.S. work authorization that lets F-1 international students gain hands-on, paid work experience that is an integral part of an established curriculum. It can be part-time (≤20 hrs/week) or full-time (>20 hrs/week).
What is Day 1 CPT?
Day 1 CPT refers to graduate programs that integrate CPT into the curriculum from the first day of classes. Students don't have to wait one academic year before they're allowed to work — practical training is baked into the program from semester one.
Is Day 1 CPT legal?
Yes — when issued by a SEVP-certified university whose DSO authorizes CPT based on a program that has been formally integrated into the curriculum. The schools we feature have publicly defended their programs and have long histories of issuing compliant CPT I-20s.
Who Benefits from Day 1 CPT?
F-1 students who: (a) used most of their OPT and want to continue working in the U.S., (b) are stuck in H-1B lottery cycles, (c) need to switch employer/role while staying in valid status, or (d) want a STEM-designated graduate degree at affordable tuition.
Eligibility and Requirements
Bachelor's degree (any field for many MBA programs), valid passport, basic English proficiency (some schools waive TOEFL), proof of funds for one semester, and an offer of employment or paid internship to begin CPT each semester.
Risks and Precautions
USCIS reviews Day 1 CPT use during H-1B, OPT STEM extension, and green-card stages. Mitigate risk by attending all required on-site sessions, keeping CPT employment relevant to your major, and maintaining clean academic standing — we coach every student through this.
How to Apply for Day 1 CPT
Pick a program → submit application + transcripts → receive offer + I-20 → pay SEVIS fee → schedule visa interview → arrive 30 days before start → DSO issues CPT authorization → begin working week one.
